Warden Stanton approaches a horse in a stall, lifts mane to reveal brand.
 
WARDEN STANTON
See that? The horses have numbers just like the inmates. Only difference is, the inmates came here because they broke the law. The horses just ran out of luck. The inmates know they can't send the horses back out on the range, but if they keep their heads in here they can give them a second chance somewhere else.
 
KEITH
You seem to take a special interest in Billy.
 
WARDEN STANTON
He never let a horse down. You understand the challenges a man with his time faces, you appreciate what that means.
(heads out of stable)
Billy doesn't know yet, but I'm being replaced come year end. They're stopping the program.
 
KEITH
Not everyone thinks society owes these people something.
 
WARDEN STANTON
True. But if we keep bulldozing our people like we bulldoze our land, what will we have left? We're just stewards here.
(tosses pebble into water trough)
And one thing I've learned after forty years in law enforcement, Mr. Callaway, is that redemption ripples just like retribution.
